Paul...
I agree with you about people trying to sell things on here - that really isnt right, especially when it may not work or even provide any relief....or are dangerous...
Now about herbs, you are wrong. You didnt really read my post or maybe you dismissed it as being inaccurate.
Herbs can help a great deal... it is conventional medicine that sometimes treats the symptoms only and not the problem. Herbs (in the whole form) treat the whole person... they have been used for so long.
And you are right, I dont have GERD. But, it all boils down to having too much acid production going on in the stomach, if I am correct... and if something that is gentle (ie a herb) can help alleviate the symptoms, and make the symtoms go away, then what is the problem?
Here in Oz, there is a lot of herbal stuff (but not as prevalent, as say in Germany or other European countries). People are more informed about herbs and what herb can help with what. But most of all, it's inside our heads. What we believe will eventuate...
And I wouldnt take alcohol for any stomach problems - what that person was suggesting seems rather dangerous in my humble opinion...
Now for me, I have been drinking the marshmallow tea and eating a really bland diet, as the ulcer/gastritis I had was really, really bad... and the only releif I find at present is to take the tea and not have any spicy stuff. I am sure I will be able to eat everything again, but as I am doing it the slow way (herbs, bland diet), I know it will take a bit longer for me, than say if I were taking the conventional medication.
Now this ulcer/gastritis started earlier this year for me, and I was put on sucralfate and that helped for a while, until one night (after about 6-7 days), I woke up feeling like I couldnt breathe, so I stopped taking those! Obviously the ulcer wasnt healed, but was getting better. Now taking that medication helped me get back to normal quickly, but it gave me side-effects. Thats the reason I decided to give herbs a go, plus the Losec/Prilosec can give you panic attacks... Not for me!
If you can go to a Naturopath, do go and see one. These days, there are many doctors who have studied natural therapies too - at least here in Australia there are some.
